The <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/_cache\/files\/b\/9\/b98fd569-3e49-47c0-bb23-8fccf88d7274\/4E5106A7CF429C5C518C8C6003A94AFC.eagle-act-for-introduction---signed.pdf\">Ensuring American Global Leadership and Engagement (EAGLE) Act<\/a> spans nearly 500 pages and aims to push back against Chinese power by strengthening American alliances around the world. Meeks hopes that the bill will encourage \u201cconstructive competition\u201d between the US and China and stay possible military conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In a conversation with the <a href=\"https:\/\/asiasociety.org\/\">Asia Society<\/a>, Meeks <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/2021\/5\/icymi-meeks-remarks-on-reinvigorating-american-global-leadership-in-response-to-growing-competition-from-china\">noted concerning trends<\/a> in Chinese governance like the surveillance of citizens, mistreatment of ethnic minorities, human rights abuses in Hong Kong and aggressive policing of disputed borders. Meeks declared that the US must \u201cconsider the environment that has enabled the PRC to act in the manner it does. We have to be frank about the fact that part of the reason is that we have allowed American leadership and American engagement globally to slip by the wayside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Act addresses human rights issues in the Indo-Pacific in several ways. Specific provisions affirm American support for \u201cthe robust exercise by residents of Hong Kong of the rights to free speech, the press, and other fundamental freedoms\u201d and establish increased protections for Hong Kongers fleeing persecution. The bill also condemns the ongoing genocide against Uyghurs and would block the import of any goods forcibly produced by Uyghurs in work camps.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA), China emits more greenhouse gases than any other nation.
